<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">This was the
second painting I completed on a smoky/hazy day on the Madison River,
here in Montana. The first was a 9"X12" down by the riverbank, the
further I got away from the river the hazier it became. The only panel I
had left was a 10"X12" and still looking up the river the haze was
starting to clear up due to light wind. I was able to see more color in
the Dogwood and Willows. While out in the field I look for different
compositions than what I would compose in the studio. I don't sale many of my plein-air work due to the fact that I use them for reference for
my studio work and they hold too many unique memories that I like to
revisit on occasion.</span><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"> <span style="font-size: small;"> </span></span><br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">for larger studio paintings. These are really personal paintings and each have a unique story behind them. I try not to have any preconceived ideas or compositions in mind when I head out into the field. I hike around for hours looking and studying my subject matter and how the light effects the surrounding areas. These twelve paintings comprise different seasons and unique geographic elements of the Montana outdoors that I experience and love. </span></div>

These are for Toucan's "Little Art Show". Postcard size paintings that
are unframed. I usually take the opportunity to try different techniques
and materials with these small paintings. I just finished reading a
great book on techniques of the masters, so I started with a detailed
black & white under painting, then started glazing in with thin
layers of color building to thicker applications of paint. It was really
fun and the end result was a Classic Atelier look.</span></span></span></span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;">On August 17, 1959 an earthquake in the Madison Canyon River Area, near West Yellowstone, formed Quake Lake. The earthquake created a massive landslide of about 80 million tons of rock, which stopped the flow of the Madison River in the Madison River Canyon gorge.</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />

The end result for Taking Flight is a more tonal painting. These Mallard Drakes with their signature Green heads really blend into their environments.
